Randy and I are planning a backpacking trip from Seaside to Manzanita (in Oregon). Hopefully the weather will be nice to us -- hiking in the rain never sounds like that much fun. We're supposed to leave on 4/17 and get back on 4/20. Ahh, sweet sweet backpacking.
Posted by Eli at April 15, 2002 07:04 PMI want to plan a backpacking trip down the southern coast of Oregon, from Brookings to Port Orford, (50+ miles). Do you have any suggestions where I can find some information regarding the Oregon Coast Trail? Route description, topographic maps, pre-hike information, land-use regulations and what to expect. I really appreciate any information you have to offer.
Respecfully,

Hi Chris.
The Oregon coast is beautiful, and makes for fairly easy backpacking. I've done two trips down the coast, one from Seaside to near Manzanita http://www.nerdmonkey.com/pics/coast_backpacking_apr2002/ , and the one you saw from Bandon to Port Orford http://nerdmonkey.com/pics/south_coast_backpacking_oct2002/ .
The only information we used for our hike was found in _Backpacking Oregon_ by Douglas Lorain. http://tinyurl.com/eos4 . It was just detailed enough, with the exception of a few diversions that made the trip more of an adventure but which I fail to remember exactly. Anyway, it should have all the info you need. The book contains many different backpacking options. Be forewarned, though, that difficult for Douglas Lorain means really difficult.
The southern Oregon coast trip we took can be completed in 3-4 days, and is 29 miles. I don't believe we hit highway 101 at all with the exception of the last mile or so. The trip had beautiful moments, but you should be ok with a long journey down an empty beach for miles. I enjoyed it, and every time I look at the pictures I can't wait to go backpacking again.
Good luck,
- Eli
